I was bending down, peering at a shape on the ground this afternoon, trying to get my eyes to focus on it. I couldn't work out if it was a piece of rope, a stick or a small snake. Of course, it was a snake, as my friend pointed out to me. Poor eyes. They still can't focus on anything that isn't a foot from my face. Thankfully I didn't get that close to the snake, though it did turn out to be nonvenomous.
There has been a lot of pottering and knitting in these parts of late, as my eye recovers from the surgery. I feel like I am banging on about it, but it is a major factor in my days at the moment. It's three weeks today, with an expected recovery time of six weeks (with surgery in my other eye to follow.) The days are filled with our usual rhythm of playing, cleaning, washing, cooking. Only, everything takes a little longer when you can't see it properly. I am also unable to drive or tolerate sunlight. So the children and I have been spending most of our days inside, with the occasional outing with a sympathetic family member. Dear friends have been coming to visit too - some kindly hanging out my washing while they're here.
Of course, there have been moments of cabin fever - for children and mother alike. Surely it would be worse were I not the homebody that I am. However, once you are told you can't drive each idea you have involves driving. To keep Cohen entertained we brought him a pair of goldfish, which he has named Butter and Deshaw. He is fascinated by them. The placement of the fish tank with regards to the power point required some furniture rearrangement. His Ikea bookcase fell apart in the process, for the last time. Rather than replace it with another $50 chipboard bookcase I looked on ebay and was incredibly pleased when I won the above book case for $20. Sturdy, white painted pine, this vintage book case is home made and a little rough around the edges. Perfect for a four year olds collection of books and toys.
I think there will be a few more items rearranged and projects tackled while we spend our days at home.

A snake - eek! As I read that first bit I thought it would surely be a piece of rope.
ReplyDeleteLove the new bookcase. My husband managed to salvage our little one's Ikea bookcase with some extra screws. Luckily it seems to have worked (so far).

Ahhh, we don't get snakes here. I could'nt imagine! Hope you mend quickly xo
ReplyDeleteI do think of you often and wonder how it's going. Sounds like you are getting better every day and isn't it funny as soon as you're told you can't do something, it becomes the most crucial thing in your life to do!! hang in there one day you will be out and about driving and seeing those pesky snakes. WE have them in our yard all non poisonous so far :)
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you didn't get too close to that snake! We had one a few weeks back at out front fence, though I wish I could say it was non venomous, all of ours have been browns.
ReplyDeleteHope the cabin fever is not getting to you, and that the time passes quickly for you. Wish I could pop in and lend a hand :)
ps- those old sturdy homemade pieces are just the best. They last forever.
A little bit of sorting and rearranging makes the whole space feel all fresh again. I've been rearranging all the pictures on the walls trying to get it all looking right.

I think if I had encountered a snake, my heart would have stopped. I remember once my mum going out to change and move the water bowl for the dog. There was a brown snake in it. We didn't know this until mum had tossed the contents of the bowl into the air. Her scream is still with me. I'm now 52 and was about five at the time : mum was heavily pregnant with my younger sister. Me and snakes. No.
ReplyDeleteThat was a bargain getting the bookshelf for twenty dollars. Being real wood it can be repainted and freshened up any time you want to as well. I've been doing a little knitting as well...just a scarf.
ReplyDeleteI am laughing with you about the snake! I wouldn't go anywhere near a snake, and there you were, standing beside it, peering down at it! Oh you poor thing! Has enough time passed yet for a good laugh about it? It does seem pretty funny as well as pretty scary! Loving the fish and the new bookcase, and above all else, loving Cohen's imaginative naming of the fish! Butter is a great name for a fish. He could have called the other one lemon or pepper ;)
ReplyDelete(shudder) We've had a few snakes around here lately...horrible creatures! Unfortunately the majority of our sightings have been of venomous ones - namely Taipans!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great bookcase! And I'm so glad to hear that your ear is continuing to heal well :-)

I've been thinking of you. I'm pleased to hear you are healing well and how lovely to have such wonderful and thoughtful friends to do the odd job here and there. Take care..x
